Light In The Attic Details Compilation Of ’80s Japanese Music

'Somewhere Between' features tracks from Dip In The Pool, Mkwaju Ensemble and more

Light In The Attic has a new compilation on the way as part of its Japan Archival Series.

Somewhere Between: Mutant Pop, Electronic Minimalism & Shadow Sounds Of Japan 1980–1988 comprises 14 tracks of ’80s Japanese music, covering ambient, experimental pop and electronic music. The label says the compilation combines the sounds explored on last year’s Kankyō Ongaku compilation, which focused on Japanese ambient music, and the two Pacific Breeze compilations of Japanese city pop that were released in 2019 and 2020. It has been co-curated by Dublab’s Mark "Frosty" McNeill and Light In The Attic’s Yosuke Kitazawa.

Included in the tracklist are tracks from Dip In The Pool, Mkwaju Ensemble (who include Midori Takada in their line-up), ambient artist Yoshio Ojima, and pop/soul singer Noriko Miyamoto. Light In The Attic says this is the first time that much of this material has been released outside of Japan.

You can listen to clips and check the full tracklist via the Light In The Attic website.

Light In The Attic will release Somewhere Between: Mutant Pop, Electronic Minimalism & Shadow Sounds of Japan 1980-1988 on January 22, 2020.
