We're All In It Together: Quietus Writers' Tracks Of 2013
Laurie Tuffrey , December 18th, 2013 07:23

Our staff and writers distil 2013's tracks down into handy top tens for our year-end hit parade

Add your comment »

Much in the spirit of the season, when we asked our writers to give us their top ten tracks of the year last week, we got a hefty haul of lists. If there's one thing that characterises this chart of single tracks, it's its lack of singularity. No one choice had more than five votes, and while a clutch of artists and bands got nods for multiple tracks, similarly to our half year rundown, the rest of the picks were dispersed over a vast amount of territory, with the familiar big-hitters nestling alongside pieces from free-jazz groups and two-minute noise-punk cuts, not infrequently in the same list.

The two most voted-for artists were East India Youth and Kanye West, perhaps one of the few points of comparison between them (although, at time of publishing, we were still looking into reports that William Doyle has also taken to declaring, "I am Henry Ford, and I am Howard Hughes, and I am Michelangelo!" in interviews). And while we'd like to state that we weren't beating down our scribes' doors to get them to vote for the first artist released on the Quietus Phonographic Corporation, it's also been hugely gratifying to find that our massive excitement when we first head 'Heaven, How Long' and 'Dripping Down' last year has been enthusiastically shared by our contributors.

After that, the acts getting the most nods were Daft Punk, Jon Hopkins, Grumbling Fur (who produced our album of the year, Glynnaestra), These New Puritans, David Bowie, The Knife, Hey Colossus, Girl Band (for their monstrous Blawan cover), Pusha T, John Grant and Daniel Avery, the latter in collaboration with Perc, for the banger par excellence remix of 'Reception', making for a mighty fine baker's dozen of Quietus favourite tracks of 2013 (in alphabetical order):

Daniel Avery - 'Reception' (Perc Remix)
David Bowie - 'Where Are We Now?'
Daft Punk feat. Pharrell Williams - 'Get Lucky'
East India Youth - 'Heaven, How Long'
Girl Band - 'Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage'
John Grant - 'Pale Green Ghosts'
Grumbling Fur - 'The Ballad Of Roy Batty'
Hey Colossus - 'Hot Grave'
Jon Hopkins - 'Open Eye Signal'
The Knife - 'Full Of Fire'
Pusha T - 'Numbers On The Boards'
These New Puritans - 'Organ Eternal'
Kanye West - 'Bound 2'/'I Am A God'

We'd like to thank our writers for providing such varied lists, what amounts to a very fine index of music in 2013 and hopefully a mixture of the familiar and the as-yet-unknown for holiday listening. Undoubtedly, as with all of our end of year charts, there will be things that we've missed, so let us know your choices in the comments below.

It's cool to see most people featuring EIY, Kanye, Pusha T and the Knife. Kind of shocking not to see the Flaming Lips anywhere after the Terror, although that isn't an album where any particular track stands out in a way. Shouts out to Jenny Hval.
How come everyone went for Kanye but no one put Blood on the Leaves??

I am shocked and appalled to see no trace of Miley Cyrus in any of these lists. Is this even a credible music publication anymore?

Apart from that glaring oversight, I'm glad to see Bound 2 getting picked. I don't understand the hate for the track (and Yeezus in general), when you factor in how much by-the-numbers hip hop gets praised to high heaven. Props to Mr Parkhill for also picking Sophie's Bipp (totally ruined by Vampire Weekend though).

I expected Paul Woolford or Mark Pritchard to get in among those 480 (estimated) tracks in some form (producer or remixer), considering the prevalence of jungleghettojukeworktechbass this year. I had 'Everyone's got to make a liver' going round my head for weeks.

And including nothing from Autre Ne Veut is almost as bad as neglecting the Bangerz!

So pleasing to see Jon Hopkins get so much love. Great album. Also nice to see the title track get a mention too. 'Immunity' is a late night, gazing at the stars from the gutter gem of a song. Congrats to those who put 'Pink Rabbits' in their lists as well. You win!

In reply to Luke:

Luke, I was planning on including Miley's "We Can't Stop" but the last-minute release of EMA's 'Satellites' pushed it off the list. Shame you can't appreciate the Vampire Weekend album—I think their songwriting has improved dramatically.

In reply to Chad Parkhill:

There are tracks listed here I'm not mad keen on (The Knife, Factory Floor, Fuck Buttons) but if they, for example, came on the radio, I wouldn't immediately change stations. VW are definitely a 'turn over' band.

Aside from that there is a lot of good stuff on these lists, but some tracks listed I find work much more successfully as part of an album than as stand alone pieces. Haxan Cloak, Jon Hopkins, Julianna Barwick, Tim Hecker, The Caretaker, William Basinski, basically anything in the more ambient/experimental/noisy mould. Even my favourite album of the year R+7, I'd be struggling to choose a single track off it to put on a top 10 (maybe Chrome Country at a push). I'd more likely choose Ninetoes - Finder or Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - Invader Invader.

Katy Perry or Beyonce work as singles artists arguably more so than album artists, so their inclusion makes more sense. (Obviously, some Quietus writers will mainly like genres suited for the album format). Even Omar Souleyman or RP Boo, sometimes 40 odd minutes of dabke might be too much or an hour of unmixed footwork is fatiguing to the ears (I really like both those albums too, though I prefer DJ Rashad's album, but I haven't listened to Legacy for about 6 months so my opinion might have changed).

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Higgs Boson Blues
