Following his recent signing to Stolen Recordings to release his debut album, East India Youth has just posted his first official video, for ‘Looking For Someone’, the lead track from the Hostel EP released through the Quietus Phonographic Corporation earlier this year – have a watch above.
It’s an ace clip which sees EIY’s William Doyle ascend the Heron Tower in London, moving from street level to the top floor for a brief moment, before descending, the camera twisting and contorting through various angles, a disorienting glance across the planes and surfaces of the cityscape.
Says director Joe Spray: "I remember being arrested by the track the first time I heard it, at first for the candour of the lyrics, but later just for the rhythm of Will’s voice. I wanted to emphasise both of these elements visually through a performance-based video that gave Will the opportunity to perform straight at the viewer. It was a challenge because of the timings of the glass elevator we had to get a lot of the performance in one continuous take. But I was taken aback by Will’s ability to perform so consistently. I work with actors a lot, and it’s rare to see that kind of honesty in a performance take after take, and essential for us that day due to our time constraints with the location.
"More than anything I wanted to create something simple and absorbing that people could lose themselves in. When Will and I first started talking about making a video we realised we shared a love of Structural Films of the 60s and 70s. I’ve always enjoyed the way these works tear at the fabric of film and disorientate and destroy the viewer’s perception of time and space. I thought educing a similar visceral experience, as the second element for the video would combine well with Will’s layers of aerial electronics. I think London’s skyline does the job well; all glass, steel and concrete."
EIY is currently supporting These New Puritans on their final run of UK dates and is set for his first headline show at London’s Sebright Arms next month, before joining up again with Factory Floor, having just returned from touring Europe with them.
