Of all the places you might expect to see Chicago’s Jamal Moss, aka Hieroglyphic Being, play live, the Royal Albert Hall isn’t the first to spring to mind. But that’s exactly where he’ll be for Rewired Live, for an evening’s worth of experimentation along the borderlines between dance music and rhythmic noise presented by The Wire. It takes place on 10th October in the Elgar Room.
Moss is a one-off, whose music has come to increasing prominence over the last 18 months or so, despite his having been working within his own unique niche for well over a decade now. Inspired equally by Ron Hardy and Sun Ra, he uses house and techno structures as loose frameworks around which to hang freeform voyages into outer space, via longform, jazz-influenced melodic explorations, experiments with rhythm and cassette-tape saturated lead lines. His live and DJ sets, meanwhile, are impressive for their ability to blur together elements of disco, house, post-punk, industrial and jazz into an unpredictable but compulsive whole. His performance for Rewired Live will be an exclusive set, written especially for the night.
Also joining him will be Ralph Cumbers, aka Bass Clef, operating for the evening under his Some Truths guise. Some Truths is his outlet for experiments with modular synthesis, under which he released an excellent cassette last year, The First Gate Of Dreaming, through his Magic + Dreams label.
