what a pretentious, garbage list. In terms of influence, all a Deftones list needs is Korn, Sade and Meshuggah, the three bands they have ripped on their whole career. I wouldnt say Faith No More as Chino ALWAYS is off key and cant sing live. If they were really influenced by FNM he would at least hold a note and not sing through 'breathing' softly and using a high powered mic. Hack band at best, although their drummer is awesome and their guitarist is wasted on this shite.

So appreciative of this list request/response. Deftones have been my top favorite band since at least 1998 and I've always caught interest in new music through Chino's favorites & influences, such as The Cure, Weezer, and others, which was especially mind-opening when I was an unexposed teen stuck on metal bands.

I feel it's for this reason that The Deftones have always persevered in my mind, for although many Deftones fans have different reasoning for loving them, my main love is for their versatility, which I've learned [through interviews and close listening] comes mainly from them disputing over trying to shove as much of their individual influences in the music as possible. Though this may have been a difficult approach at times, I feel it's made them the band and the sound they are, changing dramatically from album to album.

However, although I know other fans will disagree with me on this, I feel this is the same reason the latest album, Diamond Eyes, isn't as appealing to me. I feel it centers more on chunky riffs deriving from more of Stephen's taste & influences, which Chino isn't completely opposed to, but I feel that especially in his older days and after going through Chi's accident, the last thing Chino wants to do is have a battle of influences when trying to write with a friend coming in as the bassist.

Agree or disagree, I just hope they release "Eros" at some point, bc I'd love to hear what the album was really supposed to sound like. Sorry for the tangent; thanks for the great article, Quietus.

Davey, just because the guy picks albums you wouldn't expect doesn't mean he's trying to impress. Maybe it's that you (and Chezz) read too many articles about Deftones that aren't true. It's not all about the Cure, Depeche Mode, and Faith No More, and the band does not dispute over what style of music to make for a song or album. Chezz, if you see interviews with the whole band, they all jam together, bringing their own styles, and from that comes what you hear. It's not "battle of influence", it's a group of friends who have played together for over 20 years (minus Chi) making music that they all love together. The final product is Deftones music, and it's been great music since Adrenaline, just their own sound now. And having checked out Bohren und der Club of Gore, I have found a new band I must listen to more of. Thank you Chino....and by the way, of course, Deftones are one of my favorite bands...

Anything he does interests me, with shades of grey, and I wasn't surprised to see Sade or Hum on here. Yes fantastic planet was an amazing record, as was that band, but Hum were quite overlooked as a result of fantastic planet and there was much more meat on that bone. Chino has always had a wide sprectrum of musical tastes and has always expressed a huge love and appreciation for it. Those of us who are fans shouldn't be surprised by a list like this. And what exactly makes it pretentious or arrogant? Because he can articulate himself? He's never been one who was afraid to show us who he really is, despite what so many of you rocker, metalhead types want him to be. He is so much more than Deftones and that is something that only helps make Deftones music as good as it is. And the Deftones/Korn comparision needs to die already. There never should have been one in the first place!

@Funnyguy - I think you're way off the mark. Deftones were around long before Korn. So if anyone is ripping anyone off, it is Korn.

I have seen Deftones 5 times live. In the past, there have been moments where Chino didn't give it his all vocally, but I think he's now taking his music more seriously as an artist. I saw Deftones live recently and he sounded amazing.

Disagree completely that Deftones are a "hack band." If anything, they're one of the most under-appreciated, artistically different bands in recent times. They don't make music to be played on the radio, they make the music they like and maintain the integrity of it all. I highly respect bands that don't receive radio play, because they're not in it for the corporate aspect, they're in it to make the music they like.

Just because Chino has publicly stated that The Cure, Duran Duran, Weezer and Morrissey were influences on his musical career, doesn't mean they're his all-time favorites. Anyone who likes music, has tons and tons of favorite songs/albums. Musical tastes can also change over time.

Deftones are consummate professionals and amazing artists, and when you're a musician or really into music for that matter, you don't just sit around listening to your favorite bands over, and over, and over. You hunt out new music that interests you.

This is why the radio sucks. The only thing (most) radio stations play is the same crap everyday from bands at the top of the Billboard who make uninspiring music.

Once you've heard even your favorite albums enough, you start looking for new stuff you haven't heard before.

Just my opinion.

For a 13 yo.. this is the most inspiring thing that could ever be brought to me. Thanks to my mother, Deftones had led me to Team Sleep which led me to Zach Hill And Face Tat, Hella And alot of other great music. and also DJ Crook. Chino Moreno Who led me to all this great fantastic music. So unique. I'm proud to be what i am instead of those Justin beiber and lady gaga fags at school. People laugh at me for listening to this music. Fuck them. I can Gaze in all this forever no matter how old. I found so much i love now.
