LISTEN: Yuji Toriyama Reissued

Japanese fusionist Yuji Toriyama is the subject of a retrospective release from the new reissue label Time Capsule

Time Capsule is a new label focused on reissuing old material picked out by digger Kay Suzuki and the network of DJs at London bar Brilliant Corners.

The label’s second release shines a light on Japanese fusionist, guitarist and composer Yuji Toriyama, and premiering above is one of the six tracks on the reissue: ‘Maze’. It’s a classy slice of disco-inflected club music centred around airy synths and crooning bass guitar, and one of the highlights of the release which is titled Choice Works 1982-1985.

The release marks the first time music by Toriyama has been reissued officially and the six tracks featured on the retrospective are lifted from his earliest albums, all three have become fairly rare on the resale market.

"Yuji Toriyama is an unsung guitar hero in Japanese fusion," says Time Capsule head Kay Suzuki. "While there were so many talented Japanese guitarists in the 80s, Yuji’s production and arrangement in the era were very experimental and raw. I chose tracks that would somehow resonate with the feelings we have in 2018."

Following his early instrumental albums Toriyama went on to write pop and TV music arrangements through the 90s as well as compose music for video games such as Street Fighter II and Final Fantasy XII.

Time Capsule will release Choice Works 1982-1985 on November 2. You can pre-order it here.
