Berlin-based Yair Elazar Glotman and Stockholm-based Mats Erlandsson have been working together on projects since 2015 with the first fruits of their work together having landed in the form of the Negative Chambers LP in 2017.
Now, they’re back with a new collaborative album, titled Emanate, having signed to FatCat Records’ sister label 130701. Above, from the album, you can hear ‘From Procession To Refraction’.
Emanate sees the composers continue to explore their ideas of a ‘displaced sound’, using both electronic and acoustic sound sources. The album is divided into nine pieces but was recorded as one long, single composition as an attempt to create one whole piece that is closer in length and formal approach to the classical music compositions that were more commonplace in the pre-streaming era.
Recording in Berlin in February of 2019, the pair assembled an ensemble consisting of Hilary Jeffery (trombone), Lucy Railton (cello), Liam Byrne (Viola da gamba) and Simon Goff (violin). Glotman took on double bass duties and the piece was performed in full twice, with Glotman and Erlandsson ultimately selecting the second as the best.
The work had also been performed by the musicians only days earlier at Berlin’s CTM Festival, and once recorded, Glotman added overdubs with the help of Viktor Orri Arnarson on viola, Sara Fors providing vocals and Maria W Horn on organ.
130701 will release Emanate on May 15.
