Poly Styrene, the late frontwoman of punk band X-Ray Spex, is to be the focus of a new documentary called Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliché
The project is currently in the process of being crowdfunded and you can find details on how to support it here. The documentary will feature a voiceover from her daughter, Celeste Bell, who is also co-writing it alongside Zoë Howe, responsible for biographies of The Jesus And Mary Chain, The Slits and more. They will also co-author a biography about Styrene set for release in 2018.
The documentary is planned to mark the 40th anniversary of X-Ray Spex’s album Germfree Adolescents. The film will look at Styrene’s work with X-Ray Spex as well as her experience as a black woman in the punk scene of the late 1970s. The film will be directed by Paul Sng, whose previous work includes Sleaford Mods: Invisible Britain.
