Some of the Quietus’ favourite groups in the UK noise underground are featured on a new compilation in age of Deafness Research UK. The 14 tracks have been put together by Steve Lee of the Wrongpop promotions organisation , who will be donating 100% of the profit from the £5 cover price to the deafness charity. You can listen to the album via the Bandcamp player below and it’ll be available to buy until March 31st.
Says Steve, "seven of the tracks are exclusive to this album, (Ice Sea Dead People, Camp Stag, That Fucking Tank, Lords, Part Chimp, Joeyfat & Hills Have Riffs have given tracks you can’t get anywhere else) and all bands and labels involved have happily given their permission for their music to be on this awesome compilation!"
We asked Steve how he had got involved: "I’ve previously raised money for Deafness Research UK, when I heard a friend of mine was trying to get some money together for his newborn nephew to get a cochlea implant," he explains. "I had a Wrongpop gig that was coming up, so after speaking to the venue and bands, all of the money from that gig went to help this kid get the operation. That’s how I got involved with this great charity, and I’ve put on a few more gigs like this since then."
What inspired you to make the record?
SL: Wrongpop has always been a non profit night for people to check out new music – the bands get paid and also have a great audience to play to. This time around, for £5.00, people can buy 14 tracks (seven exclusives) to listen to, and they’re also raising money to help people that can’t. Win win situation.
Has doing this project made you realise that those of us with good hearing often take it for granted?
SL: That’s the exact reason I put this album together, to make people aware of that very thing. Like many others, I’m a huge fan of music and I couldn’t imagine a world without sound. Hopefully the money raised will help Deafness Research UK to continue doing the important work that they do.
