When Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien Met Kanye

Radiohead member discusses meeting the rapper at Carnival in Rio in 2012

Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien has spoken about the time he met Kanye West and spoke to him about British musicians’ religious beliefs.

In an interview with The Invisible’s Dave Okumu, which can be heard in full here, O’Brien said they met four years ago during Carnival in Rio de Janeiro and that he told the rapper: “If you asked pretty much any British musician whether they believed in God, I’d tell you that 99% of them would say, ‘Don’t be stupid, of course not’. It blew his mind. He was like, ‘You cannot be serious.’”

Elsewhere in the interview, the pair discuss Prince, ABBA and recent Radiohead concerts. The interview is part of Ninja Tune’s ongoing podcast series which can be subscribed to here and comes in the wake of the release earlier this year of new albums from both O’Brien in Radiohead’s A Moon Shaped Pool and Okumu in The Invisible’s Patience.
