We Can Elude Control is set to return to Peckham’s NCP multi-storey carpark on 18th August, for another free evening’s worth of adventures on the borders between techno, noise and sound art. The event, curated by Emptyset’s Paul Purgas, follows up the massive summer edition of WCEC which took place at Bexhill-On-Sea’s De La Warr Pavilion and featured the likes of Carter Tutti, Helm and Ekoplekz.
This one features a similarly esteemed set of artists, all operating at the bleeding edge where noise, improvised electronics and techno smash headlong into one another. Heading up the bill are two representatives of Bristol’s Subtext label (also responsible for putting out Emptyset’s excellent recent music) – ex-Vex’d man Roly Porter and Paul Jebansam, who will be be debuting a collaborative improvised electronics set. Both were last spotted doing unspeakably intense things to tracks from Emptyset’s Demiurge album – you can read more on that remix 12" here.
Joining them will be PAN label head Bill Kouligas. PAN have been responsible for some of the most exciting and adventurous releases in electronic music over the last few years, with 2012 so far yielding a veritable treasure trove of abrasive audio treats, from the return of SND to NHK’Koyxen’s scorching broken techno, via the darkened corners of Helm’s Impossible Symmetry album and Heatsick’s gorgeous Deviation EP, which landed in our top dance releases of the year so far. Kouligas will be playing an exclusive live set; for a taste of the sort of textures to expect, listen to his excellent recent mix for the now-sadly-defunct mnml ssgs blog here.
Last but not by any means least is a rare London live performance from Broken20 label head Ruaridh Law, aka The Village Orchestra/TVO. Law’s musical travels have taken him through a whole host of territories over the past few years, from sumptuous techno to dark, concept-driven ambient music, with his DJ sets generally representing the more driving, club-friendly end of his repertoire. His latest album Red Night, released last month through his Broken60 sublabel, was his best yet, a tryst through slow, grubby techno and electronic drone, all themed around William Burroughs’ novel Cities Of The Red Night. You can listen to that album here – expect this live set, in the suitably darkened surrounds of a London car park, to have a similarly intense and oppressive effect.
Rounding off the bill will be Roberto Crippa, playing with live instruments and customised electronics, and Rosie Farrell, who will be giving a performance with turntables and spoken word.
We Can Elude Control takes place at the NCP Car Park in Peckham on 18th August, from 7:30-10:00pm. Entry is free. More details are available here.
