It’s been well over three years since the Quietus last caught up with Liverpool’s We Came Out Like Tigers. If some bands could be said to wear their hearts on their sleeves, then the hard-hitting four-piece’s garments are sodden and saturated crimson; unflinchingly addressing personal and social situations, …Tigers are a visceral antidote to the wash of apathy and de-sensitisation that covers so much of our generation.
The group have been busy since 2010, with an EP and an album as well as several ever-territorially-expanding tours. Finding a home with Dog Knights Productions, they follow up their 2012 record Agelessness And Lack with the label with a thunderous new EP, Ever-Crushed At Pecket’s Well, that you can now stream exclusively here:
A message in defiance, Ever-Crushed At Pecket’s Well sees We Came Out Like Tigers on suitably vitriolic form, the group now wholly masterful in the way they sharply change dynamic from quiet to loud, each return to throat-lacerating, bludgeoning density acting as a sucker punch to the senses. The new EP deals with more tightly-knit issues than the group have previously, critiquing the hardcore and punk scene they’ve come to know and become dismayed by, the record a realisation that those they thought they trusted may not have been on the same wavelength after all.
An attached messaged reads: "We found disappointment at every turn: we sang songs about changing the world because we believed we could, we played this music because we thought punk rock was a scene that would never allow fascists, sexists, homophobes and their apologists to be tolerated, but such ideas seemed to be little more than a token mention whilst people awkwardly tuned instruments. We thought that heavy music was played by people with heavy opinions, heavy souls who wanted to have heavy late night conversations. We thought people valued originality and integrity over petty attempts at fame and recognition. We thought our little band releasing a little record could contribute to the resistance, could keep the flame alive."
And yet they continue to do so, positivity ultimately overwhelming the negatives. "We must be naïve or stupid or both, because here we are with another record, because we refuse to give up," they add. Long may they fight.
You can pre-order Ever-Crushed At Pecket’s Well from Dog Knights Productions, with release slated for April 14.
