WATCH: Steve Reich Chats Influences

Composer chats influences to BLOC

"Everything that happens within our lives has played some role. Now, most of the time, it’s very hard to understand how that works…" In advance of his appearance at London’s BLOC Weekend, which takes place from 6th-7th July, legendary minimalist composer Steve Reich found time to sit down on the couch and discuss his influences. Watch the film above, which travels from Ghana – where he took inspiration from local drumming – to Bali, and to his plans to rewrite Radiohead.

Reich’s a great teller of stories about his own history. For more from him it’s well worth watching this excellent on-the-sofa lecture at Red Bull Music Academy, which was filmed a couple of years ago.

This marks the second in a series of videos BLOC are making with the festival’s headliners – to watch last week’s with Gary Numan, click here. For more on BLOC, head to their website.
