London-based fourpiece Ulterior continue to fly the flag for goth pop pomp with this new video for ‘The Locus Of Control’, a track taken from their forthcoming second album The Bleach Room, due via Pledge Music next year – for more info on that, go here. It sees Ulterior doing what they do best: following the tradition set down by Sisters of Mercy in the early 80s, but so rarely embraced by non-Continental European groups, and given a fresh edge. Paul McGregor and Benn McGregor of Ulterior dropped us a line to tell us more:
Simmons: For me this track is (lyrically) the centre piece of the album. It allows the silliness and gravity of the tracks around it to work. It was written in half an hour, drunk on a bus which explains the torrent of words as that is what my brain sounds like drunk and in a public space. The track was written after a day reading medical papers and then seeing a piece on the news about religious female circumcision that angered me and disgusted me to my core. I wrote it at a frustration that seemingly intelligent people can do such horrific things under the banner of the supernatural. This is pretty much the premise of the album.
McGregor: The idea stemmed from a photograph I saw of a VHS camera placed on top of a television filming an empty seat, I thought it could have been our ‘Bleach Room’ and it all stemmed from there. We spoke with our good friend and art director Ben Robinson, who we’ve worked with previously and he was really into the idea of directing it. It’s a confessional piece. The camera is filming Paul with something to say, he’s filmed by the VHS, the monitor tells one story, you see another. It’s to do with points of view; all of them blurred and some more distorted than others.
