Off the back of new album Impuros Fanaticos, insane garage rock-psych-samba band Fumaça Preta have released an unsurprisingly bizarre video for ‘La Trampa’. It is a whirl of spinning mannequin heads and bizarre props which in its determinedly lo-fi psychedelic approach recalls mad Euro-cinema of the 60s and 70s.
This suits the band down to the ground, for a whole host of reasons. Firstly, the group employs such retro sounds as giallo-horror synths and prog-flutes that in their marvellous kitsch-ness fit perfectly with this video’s bad green screen, kaleidoscopic colours and capes.
It’s also particularly appropriate for a band that doesn’t seem too beholden to modern technology. On the new album, Portuguese and Venezuelan producer/drummer/vocalist Alex Figueira comes out with such pleasantries as: "Stick your selfie stick/In the infinite hole of your idiosyncrasy…In a pompous container/Fence well the ashes of the kind idolatry…And drink the blood till no more/Served to the attendants in a crowded Eucharist."
All in Portuguese, of course. The new LP, released earlier this month, mixes Sabbath riffs, Bollywood rhythms, salsa grooves and punky sensibilities to create a truly bold proposition, both danceable and destructive. The band are currently touring the UK, coming to The Lexington on April 22, then Brighton and Bristol on the following days. For more information and tickets, head here.
