Having released one of the year’s best albums earlier this year in the form of Reassemblage, Visible Cloaks have now announced the upcoming release of a mini-album entitled Lex.
Just like Reassemblage, Lex will be released by New York-based label RVNG Intl, with the mini-album taking in six tracks, closing out on a 14-minute piece by the duo made up of Spencer Doran and Ryan Carlile.
Ahead of the album’s release, the pair have shared a new video called ‘Permutate Lex’ which was made alongside fellow Portland-based artist Brenna Murphy, who was also responsible for the artwork for Reassemblage as well as several videos for the album. The video is said to guide "the sonic experience of the first five pieces of Lex". The project is commissioned and produced by Kabinett, a newly launched online art-house platform from the creators of MUBI.
The visuals of the video by Murphy provide fitting colourful accompaniment to the warming, flotation tank sounds of Doran and Carlile’s music as Visible Cloaks. The record, meanwhile, sees the pair combining their sound with unintelligible, alien vocals, the product of Doran "feeding a chain of multiple dialects and accents through a language translation software to create an auditory poetry of an evolved place and time".
Lex is released on December 8 and Visible Cloaks are currently on tour in Europe. They will play London’s Pickle Factory on November 8. You can get tickets here. Keep an eye on tQ next week too for an interview with Visible Cloaks’ Spencer Doran.
