Improvisatory drone collective Vibracathedral Orchestra are set to make a rare live appearance at The Cube cinema in Bristol tomorrow. Formed in Leeds in the late 1990’s, the group has seen a revolving cast of musicians from the experimental underground pass through its ranks over the years, which has included such names as Mick Flower, Richard Youngs and the renowned American drummer Chris Corsano among others. Their music melds the approaches of exploratory jazz, psychedelia and experimental techniques to create immersive sonic events, and has found fans in the likes of Julian Cope, who writes: "Although this lot have been called everything from a punk band (smart arsed bollocks) to a hippy freakout collective (careless bollocks), the most striking element in the work of Vibracathedral Orchestra is their extraordinary focus. It’s as though they have one riff and they’re gonna play it till they all die. The musicians swap instruments all the time, and still the groove continues, however much the shades and tones of the music change. This is music as a shamanic aid."
The event was put on by excellent Bristol promoters Qu Junktions, who have consistently brought fine left-field and cutting-edge sounds to Bristolian audiences. Support comes from Foehn alongside DJs Kid Shirt and B Dubya (Hacker Farm); get hold of tickets here and listen to ‘Goodnight Stars Goodnight Air’ below:
