Unwound Reunite After 20 Years For US Tour

The post-hardcore band have confirmed an initial run of 15 shows for early next year

Washington post-hardcore band Unwound have reunited.

The band have come back together for an initial run of 15 shows in the US, which will take place across February and March next year and see them play in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and Philadelphia. The shows will be the band’s first in 20 years, following their initial decision to disband in April 2002. They began rehearsing for the tour secretly in April of this year.

"When we put Unwound on the shelf in 2002, we never thought we’d return to the project," drummer Sara Lund said in a statement accompanying today’s tour announcement. Guitarist Justin Trosper described the band’s decision to reunite, something which they’d previously extensively denied they would ever do, as "a rebellious act against our failure."

The band’s bassist, Vern Rumsey, died in 2020. Jared Warren of Karp, Melvins and Big Business will handle bass duties for the upcoming run of shows, while Nocturnal Habits’ Scott Seckington has also joined the lineup on guitar and keyboards.

Unwound released seven studio albums across their initial run together, having formed in 1991. Their final album, Leaves Turn Inside You, was released in April 2001, and the band called it quits a year later shortly after co-headlining that year’s All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in Los Angeles.

Over the past decade, Numero Group has reissued the band’s extensive back catalogue across various box sets. The band’s final recording, Live Leaves — a live album from their final tour in 2002 — will be reissued by the label on September 2 this year.
