Tom Waits Shares Previously Unreleased Version of ‘Get Behind The Mule’

The original track appeared on 1999 album 'Mule Variations'

Tom Waits has shared a previously unreleased version of his song ‘Get Behind The Mule’.

The original track appeared on Waits’ 1999 Grammy-winning album Mule Variations, and this latest version of it, alternately titled ‘Get Behind The Mule (Spiritual)’, has been released online to mark that record’s 25th anniversary. You can listen to it below.

“Definitely part of the original idea was to do something somewhere between surreal and rural,” Waits said in a statement. “We call it surrural. That’s what these songs are: surrural. There’s an element of something old about them, and yet it’s kind of disorienting.”

Waits last released a full album of new, original music in 2011 in the form of Bad As Me. Since then, he has focused mostly on acting, having appeared in feature films such as the Coen Brothers’ The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza.
