This week, Geoff Barrow’s Bristol-based Invada label have continued the time-honoured two-bands-are-better-than-one format with the release of a split 12” between Brighton’s Esben and the Witch and Bristol’s Thought Forms. It arrives in the wake of acclaimed records from both acts last year – the former with Wash the Sins Not Only the Face and the latter with Ghost Mountain.
The split record is a fevered snapshot of what was going on behind the scenes during the acts’ 2013 joint tour, and finds them both playing to their strengths: Thought Forms’ four tracks sounds like a tryst between J Mascis and Cocteau Twins, while EATW strip back their tribal sound further, revealing raw, primal impulses.
