Third Rail, the new one-day festival from the founders of Green Man festival, have announced their film programme. The film bill has been curated by Philip Ilson, the artistic director of the London Short Film Festival, and features some of the best independent music films from the past few years. Highlights include The Punk Singer, Sini Anderson’s acclaimed documentary on Bikini Kill, Le Tigre and the Julie Ruin founder and feminist activist Kathleen Hanna, as well as Sound It Out, the excellent 2011 film by Jeanie Finlay that follows the last surviving record shop in Teesside. Also featured is Our Hobby Is Depeche Mode (aka The Posters Came From The Walls), a documentary directed by Nicholas Abrahams and Turner Prize-nominated artist Jeremy Deller. The film touches on Depeche Mode fandom worldwide, taking in moments such as a group of Moscow fans’ declaration of ‘Dave Day’ in honour of lead singer Dave Gahan. There will also be a video retrospective of the hauntological record label Ghost Box, comprising two short film pieces with music and noise by Broadcast and various Ghost Box artists.
The festival takes place in the bucolic environs of the Thames promenade in Reading on July 5, and already boasts a stonking musical line-up that includes Grumbling Fur, Teeth Of The Sea, A Winged Victory For The Sullen, Polar Bear and Oliver Wilde; head to the festival’s website for tickets.
