The title of narcotising shoegazers Spiritualized’s much-acclaimed 1997 album, Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space, now seems to be a very prescient one indeed. Jason Pierce and co. have been joined by 13 other indie astronauts to create original tunes using unique sound recordings from space, courtesy of NASA. Listen to their track above. We’re told thus: "the ‘sounds’ recorded by the Voyager probes aren’t sounds in the conventional sense; rather, they are electromagnetic radiation fluctuations in the magnetosphere of the planets, moons and large asteroids the Voyager probes traveled near. Each celestial body is composed of different elements, has its own size and mass, and therefore sounds unique". This will be released on 19 April as part of Record Store Day, features artists including Beach House, The Antlers, Youth Lagoon and more.
In preparation for the album’s (available on vinyl, CD, and as a limited 7” box set) release, the Ace Hotel London Shoreditch is hosting a free, exclusive listening party, where you’ll be able to hear all 14 tunes in their entirety. What’s more, a panel, including tQ’s very own rocketeer, Luke Turner, will discuss cosmic sounds, the Voyager missions, and the far reaches of our solar system. You can probe the project, which is being presented by super/collider, further information here, and listen to some of the space-rock mergers here on NPR.
