Vivien Goldman At The Next Quietus Social!

She will discuss her latest book, 'Revenge of the She-Punks', and take part in a panel discussion on women in punk

On July 10, The Quietus Social is excited to welcome, all the way from the US, the esteemed music journalist and author, and self-styled ‘punk professor’, Vivien Goldman.

She will be in conversation with writer/broadcaster Lucy O’Brien, talking about her new book Revenge of the She-Punks which has been published by Omnibus Press. It’s billed as a feminist history of modern music from Poly Styrene to Pussy Riot.

For over 40 years, Goldman has been the unofficial chronicler and champion of punk and reggae, having long documented their intersection with each other, revolutionary messages, and cultural impact. Goldman’s first book since 2006’s The Book of Exodus about Bob Marley, Revenge of the She-Punks probes four themes – identity, money, love and protest – to explore what makes punk such a liberating art form for women.

She will then be joined on-stage for a panel discussion featuring Tessa Pollitt (The Slits) and Celeste Bell (author of Dayglo!: The Poly Styrene Story and daughter of Poly Styrene who worked with Goldman on many occasions).

As well as being able to put some burning questions to Goldman and the panel, audience members will have an opportunity to get copies of her new book signed.

But that’s not all…preceding the interview, lights will be dimmed and the needle will drop on The Slits’ seminal debut album Cut, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, for an immersive playback on The Social’s top-quality soundsystem, plus some selected tracks from X-Ray Spex’s Germfree Adolescents. There will also be a late bar and a DJ set from Tessa Pollitt until close.

Tickets can be purchased in advance here
