WATCH: The Pictish Trail – Wait Until

Full Fence label roster set to play Green Man, where the label will be curating a cinema tent bill

Last week, Scotland’s excellent Fence Records released The Pictish Trail’s Wait Until EP on postcard (yup, that’s right), with a mighty eight tracks available via the download code on the card, available either from TPT’s live shows (see below) or from the label’s shop. As well as the album and single versions of the track, there are remixes by Jonnie Common, Kate Canaveral, Seamus Fogarty and Sam Willis of Walls. There are also acoustic and electric live takes, recorded at Johnny Lynch’s (for The Pictish Trail is he) caravan on the island of Eigg – we’ve got a video for the latter of these, directed by Forest Of Black, which you can watch above.

‘Wait Until’, taken from the ace Secret Soundz Vol.2 album released earlier this year, is a gently coruscating electronica cut, building from a metronomic beat and synth bassline, before Lynch’s vocal intonings get swaddled in reverb eventually bringing the track to a kinetic denouement. The video neatly maps the cut, interspersing footage of Lynch performing with some shots of Eigg looking beautiful as only an Inner Hebridean island can.

Head here to have a read of our interview with Lynch, where he talks about the recording of ‘Wait Until’: "[M]oving to Eigg was a huge step in what happened with this record. I’ve been here on and off for the past two-and-a-bit years now, and it’s just been incredible. My mum passed away last year, and coming over here and having the space and the time to sit down, having no distractions, it allowed me to really think about it. Time goes at a different speed up here. A lot of the songs, like ‘Michael Rocket’, ‘Wait Until’ and ‘The Handstand Crowd’ – those three songs in the middle of the record – were very much about that time. When the album was done, I kind of knew that I had to record them up here on the island."

In other Fence news, the label have a good festival summer booked. The Pictish Trail and Rozi Plain will both be playing Glastonbury between June 26-30, while they’ll be joined by the full Fence clan – Eagleowl, Randolph’s Leap, Monoganon, Kid Canaveral and James Yorkston – at Green Man, between August 16-18, where Fence will also be curating a bill at the festival’s cinema tent.
