Tonight, Rough Trade East in London will be holding their screening of Jeanie Finlay’s latest film, The Great Hip Hop Hoax.
We’re big fans of the film, which traces Dundee students Billy Boyd and Gavin Bain pulling the wool over the music industry’s eyes as Californian rap duo Silibil N’ Brains, here at tQ, so much so that our editor John Doran will be spinning a selection of prime old school hip hop cuts and hosting what promises to be an extremely entertaining conversation with Finlay and Gavin Bain, aka Brains, who’s set to release a new album following the film’s release.
We talked to Finlay last week about the film, when she said: "In my last film [Sound It Out, following the last remaining record shop in Teesside], I had a really warm relationship with the people who took part. But The Great Hip Hop Hoax had quite a difficult birth. What’s important when making a film is to reflect how you feel, and I was never that interested in the music, I was interested in the lie and the fact that they created characters. But it was also interesting for me to make a film about people I found it difficult to like at times. Hopefully the audience feel some empathy towards them or their feelings towards them change throughout the film." Read the interview in full here.
