The Flaming Lips have just announced that they’ll be releasing a new album, The Terror (artwork above), April 1.
According to their leader-in-chief Wayne Coyne, we should expect something darker this time around. He says: “Why would we make this music that is The Terror – this bleak, disturbing record…?? I don’t really want to know the answer that I think is coming: that WE were hopeless, WE were disturbed and, I think, accepting that some things are hopeless… or letting hope in one area die so that hope can start to live in another?? Maybe this is the beginning of the answer.
“We want, or wanted, to believe that without love we would disappear, that love, somehow, would save us that, yeah, if we have love, give love and know love, we are truly alive and if there is no love, there would be no life. The Terror is, we know now, that even without love, life goes on… we just go on… there is no mercy killing.”
Of course, with that release date of April 1, this could be one giant ruse and ol’ Mr Coyne may very well blow one big raspberry in our direction and skip merrily away with his talk of love disappearing, so we’ll have just wait to find out.
Either way, the band are set to play a couple of dates at London’s Roundhouse, on Monday 20 May and Tuesday 21 May – get hold of tickets here. The band will also be preceding the album with a non-LP cut, the appropriately doomily-titled ‘Sun Blows Up Today’, on February 3.
