Portland duo The Body are teaming up with Montreal trio BIG|BRAVE for a new collaborative album, titled Leaving None But Small Birds.
The album is the two acts’ first collaboration together, and is preceded by lead track ‘Oh Sinner’, based on the traditional folk song of the same name. You can listen to the track just below.
The two groups, a press release explains, sought "to make music outside the boundaries of the music each make individually" on the new album. The Body’s Lee Buford is said to have wanted to draw on the country and folk roots of The Band for the album, while BIG|BRAVE’s Robin Wattie collected lyrics and melodic lines from across Appalachian, Canadian, and English hymns and folk songs while writing material for the record.
Leaving None But Small Birds follows swiftly on from The Body’s last album, I’ve Seen All I Need To See, which Thrill Jockey put out in January. BIG|BRAVE also recently released an album, Vital, on Stephen O’Malley’s Southern Lord label.
Thrill Jockey will release Leaving None But Small Birds on September 24, 2021.
