Tape With Unreleased Prince Tracks Auctioned

Auction ends today

Three unreleased Prince songs dating back to 1978 will today be auctioned off on a one-of-a-kind cassette tape.

As FACT reports, the tape is part of a lot being auctioned by former collaborator and guitarist Dez Dickinson, Maya Garcia (Prince’s first wife) and Owen Husney (Prince’s former manager). The lot also includes items with handwritten lyrics, a guitar and Garcia’s engagement ring. The tape was first given to Dickinson by Prince to play the music a ‘female-fronted funk band’ had recorded with him on the A side. The B side features music by Prince himself.

““Sometime during the next year or so, I used the A side to record some scratch bass and guitar parts for songs I was going to be recording for a rock/power pop demo I was doing, recording over the original content,” says Dickinson in the item’s description. “On side B, Prince had his work versions of six songs, which I left intact for, at that time, unknown reasons (obviously, we now know it preserved a piece of musical history).” You can check out more information on the tape and the other items up for auction here.
