Surgeon, aka merchant of immensely satisfying, tQ favourite techno Anthony Child, has announced plans to reissue some of his early material in six volumes via a new imprint, SRX. The move comes after Child uncovered some early recordings on DAT and was "shocked to find how clear and dynamic many of my early tracks sounded, not the way I remembered them from the vinyl releases," as he writes in a blog post. "Those early tracks, recorded 20 years ago, were mastered and cut by people who had no understanding of electronic music. I actually remember cutting a dubplate back then and being asked if my track was ‘supposed to sound like that?’ The engineer was so disgusted at my music that once the cut started he left the room until it was finished."
He’s now enlisted Christoph Grote-Beverborg of Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin, who he’s worked with since 1996, to recut the recordings and put the material out "as it was originally intended" and with new artwork from Ken Meier and Yoonjai Choi of Common Name. Starting with his self-titled EP, originally released as Magneze on Downwards as Juno Plus point out, SRX will be putting out Pet 2000, Communications, Dynamic Tension EP, Rare tracks 95-96 and Unreleased tracks 95-96, all out on September 15 and available on vinyl and download.
