Sufjan Stevens To Release Ballet Score, ‘Reflections’

Pianists Timo Andres and Conor Hanick feature on the studio recording of Stevens' work

Sufjan Stevens is releasing a studio recording of one of his ballet scores, Reflections.

Originally produced for Justin Peck’s 2019 production of the same name, the score was commissioned by Houston Ballet. It marked Stevens and Peck’s sixth collaboration, with a studio recording of another of Stevens’ scores for Peck, The Decalogue, getting a release back in 2019. Pianists Timo Andres and Conor Hanick feature on the studio recording of Reflections, from which you can listen to ‘Ekstasis’ above.

Speaking about his work for ballet in a statement, Stevens said: "I’m constantly thinking about bodies moving through space when I’m writing for ballet — that is what has informed this music, first and foremost."

Asthmatic Kitty will release Reflections on May 19, 2023.
