Sufjan Stevens Unveils New Track, ‘Video Game’

It's the second song to be shared from his forthcoming album

Sufjan Stevens has shared the second taste of his forthcoming album, The Ascension.

The new track, ‘Video Game’, follows on from the unveiling of lead track ‘America’ last month, with both arriving ahead of Stevens’ first solo LP since 2015. You can watch a video for ‘Video Game’ above.

"It’s unfortunate that we live in a society where the value of people is quantified by likes, followers, listeners and views," Sufjan says, discussing his new track. "So many people are seeking attention for the wrong reasons. I think we should all be doing our best work without looking for accolades or seeking reward.

"The main takeaway of ‘Video Game’ for me is: your worth (invaluable) should never be based on other people’s approval (ephemeral). Just be yourself. Keep it real. Keep it moving. Do all things with absolute purity, love and joy. And always do your best."

The video itself features choreography by 14-year-old Atlanta-based dancer Jalaiah Harmon who originated the ‘Renegade’ dance, which went viral on TikTok last year.

The Ascension follows on from the release of Aporia, a collaborative album with Stevens’ stepfather, Lowell Brams, in March.

Asthmatic Kitty will release The Ascension on September 25, 2020.
