Tindersticks' Stuart A. Staples confirms details of his first solo album in 13 years

Tindersticks singer and guitarist Stuart A. Staples will release his first solo album in 13 years this June via City Slang.

Entitled Arrhythmia, the album sees Staples folding in multiple instruments as well as electronic experimentation. Above, you can check out lead track ‘Memories of Love’, a graceful, melancholic number which clocks in at just over the 10-minute mark, exclusively via tQ.

The album was written in what Staples calls a "lost year", beginning on Christmas Day of 2016 when he recorded the early parts of ‘A New Real’, the album’s opener. Within a year, the album was finished, with Staples saying that he felt "a growing need for each song to take a turn, to lead them into strange places, keeping the feeling or effect of the song, but only as a memory".

The album’s second side consists of one 30-minute long composition called ‘Music for ‘A Year in Small Paintings”, which has its origins in 2012, when filmmaker and frequent Staples collaborator Claire Denis first saw the works of painter Suzanne Osborne, who is also Staples’ partner. She set about turning Osborne’s oil paintings into videos, and it’s one of those videos that adorns the above clip accompanying ‘Memories of Love’.

Staples wrote the second side of the record as a reaction to those films and paintings, explaining: "From these recordings, I chipped away at its form, guiding and editing. Each time there was an exhibition of the work there was a newly evolved version of the music to accompany it."

Arrhythmia is out physically and digitally on June 15. You can pre-order the album here.
