Stephen Malkmus has announced details of his first solo album since 2001, titled Groove Denied. Above, you can watch a video for lead track ‘Viktor Borgia’, in which Malkmus appears.
The record is billed as Malkmus’ ‘electronic album’. As he explains himself: "It’s fun to mess with things that you’re not supposed to."
Of the lead track, Malkmus comments: "I was thinking things like Pete Shelley’s ‘Homosapien’, The Human League, and DIY synth music circa 1982, and also about how in the New Wave Eighties, these suburban 18-and-over dance clubs were where all the freaks would meet – a sanctuary."
In the years that have followed Malkmus’ last solo album in 2001, he has collaborated with a number of acts and of course played alongside his group The Jicks. Working on the album saw Malkmus embrace tools such as Ableton Live, while also folding in drum machines, plug-in FX and a host of synths.
Domino will release Groove Denied on March 15.
