Spinal Tap Link with Elton John for Song from ‘Spinal Tap II’ Movie

Elton features on a new version of 'Stonehenge', the song which soundtracked one of the original movie's best-loved scenes

Spinal Tap have teamed up with Elton John to release a new version of the band’s song ‘Stonehenge’.

The original track appeared in one of the best-loved scenes from 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, which saw the band, having made a mistake when commissioning an 18ft Stonehenge stage prop, have to make do with an 18in version being lowered from above while they performed instead.

The new version with John, on which he performs lead vocals, has been made for the film’s long-awaited sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. In a video for the track, released today along with the song being made available on streaming services, the band put in a more successful performance, complete with considerably larger Stonehenge props. You can watch the visual below.

‘Stonehenge’ is one of four songs on The End Continues that has been reimagined for the new film and soundtrack. ‘(Listen To The) Flower People’, ‘Cups And Cakes’ and ‘Big Bottom’ were also first made for This Is Spinal Tap, and will appear in The End Continues in reworked form.

John is one of a number of guest cameos in the forthcoming film, along with Paul McCartney, Questlove and Metallica’s Lars Ulrich. Director Rob Reiner reprises his role from the original film as director Martin “Marty” Di Bergi, while Spinal Tap’s band members played by Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer also take up their roles once again.

In the film, the three actors play ageing versions of their original characters: Nigel Tufnel, David St. Hubbins and Derek Smalls. It follows them as they, amid playing in insignificant bands, aim to come together for one more gig.

The film is set to arrive in cinemas on September 12, and an official trailer was unveiled last week.
