Miami producer SpaceGhostPurrp has signed to 4AD for the release of his first commercially available album Chronicles Of SpaceGhostPurrp, which is set for release on June 12th. SpaceGhostPurrp first came to attention last year with production credits on mixtapes by A$AP Rocky, sitting alongside the likes of Clams Casino and Ty Beats on Rocky’s LiveLoveA$AP tape, as well as releasing his own Blackland Radio 66.6. That mixtape showed off Purrp’s distinctive, rather snide ear for production, with everything cast in a low fidelity, hazy glow and punctuated by sudden changes in volume and blurts of static.
4AD’s signing of SpaceGhostPurrp sees them continue their forays into off-kilter digital age electronic music, following on from Zomby’s Dedication and Nothing EP in 2011. Like with many current stateside rap MCs and producers, Purrp draws far and wide for influence, both through time and geographically. So ‘No Evidence’, interestingly, feels to a certain extent drawn from similar lineages as Zomby – there are shades of mid-period Massive Attack in its low-slung, dubby feel and Purrp’s smoky-as-hell delivery, and its generally moody, net-frazzled feel isn’t too far from serotonin-depleted post-rave wastelands that made up the bulk of Dedication.
The album’s tracklist hasn’t been revealed yet, but the label have announced that it will compile both new and old material, and will "track the early years of this intoxicating prodigal talent".
