Our favourite documentary of last year, Sound It Out, is getting shown on BBC 4 tomorrow night, November 16, at 10.55pm.
The film was the official documentary of Record Store Day 2011 and is an entirely-crowdfunded, heartfelt look into the sole remaining independent record shop in Stockton-on-Tees, Durham. Last year, we talked to Jeanie Finlay, the documentary’s director, who gave us a bit of background into what makes Sound It Out unique: "Tom [Butchart, owner] is passionately and whole heartedly addicted to music. The classic albums, the well loved (aka knackered) ones, the hard to find records, even the Makina. He says when he looks at a record ‘he can hear every single tune in his head, it’s all memories – records hold memories’. His gentle passion is infectious and his customers really value it. I think it’s what kept him going while the other record shops of my Teesside youth closed long ago. He’s the last man standing."
