Sons Of Kemet To Break Up After Final Live Shows

"After 10 years we have decided that from the end of our scheduled 2022 shows we will be closing this chapter of the band's life for the foreseeable future," they said in a statement

Sons Of Kemet have revealed plans to break up after a final run of forthcoming live shows.

In a statement, the Shabaka Hutchings-fronted jazz group said: "This year will be the last chance to see us in the form to which you’ve grown accustomed. After 10 years we have decided that from the end of our scheduled 2022 shows we will be closing this chapter of the band’s life for the foreseeable future. We’re excited to play our remaining gigs for you and to make this summer a fitting send off."

The band have an extensive tour of Europe and the US lined up through this summer, taking in appearances at events such as Barcelona’s Primavera Sound, Bonnaroo in Tennessee and Oslo’s Øyafestivalen, among others. Their current final show is scheduled for August 21, at Hasselt’s Pukkelpop festival. Find the full list of live dates here.

Sons Of Kemet – currently made up of saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, tuba player Theon Cross, and drummers Edward Wakili-Hick and Tom Skinner – formed in 2011. The band have released four studio albums together, starting with 2013’s Burn and culminating in last year’s Black To The Future, which was their second full-length record for jazz label Impulse!

All of the group’s members have been involved in various projects alongside their work with Sons Of Kemet – most notably Hutchings forming part of The Comet Is Coming as of 2013, and Skinner joining Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood to form The Smile in 2021.
