Lee Ranaldo Talks Sonic Youth’s Future

Band have played "last shows for a while", apparently

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo has spoken about the future of the band after Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore’s recent split. They recently toured, playing, in Ranaldo’s words, "certainly the last shows for a while".

"It remains to be seen at this point what happens to the future," he said.

"I am feeling optimistic about the future no matter what happens at this point," he continued. "I mean, every band runs its course. We’ve been together way longer than any of us ever imagined would happen and it’s been for the most part an incredibly pleasurable ride."

Ranaldo also indicated that members of the band are still continuing to work on other projects together. He was speaking to Rolling Stone about his upcoming debut solo album, Between The Times & The Tides, which is to be released through Matador in March.

"It’s eight songs with a full band and two songs with pretty much acoustic guitar only," he said of the album, which implies it might land in similar territory to Moore’s recent solo efforts. "What was refreshing about this was just to see all these songs sprout and actually kind of follow each other down this road and actually get completed. I’ve got millions of tapes of half-completed songs and for some reason, at this point, I had the energy to take them all the way through to the end."
