Sonic Youth are releasing a live album chronicling what was their final show to date in North America.
Out in August, Live In Brooklyn 2011 features a recording of the band’s full 17-song set at the Williamsburg Waterfront in Brooklyn in August 2011. Though the set recording had previously been shared online by the band, it has now been remastered especially for the release of the live album, and will now be officially released digitally, as well as on vinyl, CD and cassette.
The Brooklyn show saw the band play in front of a view of the Manhattan skyline after support performances from Kurt Vile and Wild Flag. "The stage was facing the East River from the Williamsburg, Brooklyn, waterfront, and I recall the sun going down in the west during our set," the band’s Lee Ranaldo said of the concert in a statement. "It was a pretty magical, if kinda weird, day. Fitting, somehow, that our ‘last show’ should be in New York City, our home and where it all began."
The appearance at the Williamsburg Waterfront was followed by a series of gigs in South America, before the band played their last-ever show to date in Brazil in November 2011.
Silver Current will release Live In Brooklyn 2011 on August 18, 2023.
