Dance music is tribal: factions of genres, subgenres, post-genres and micro-genres. But what if Frankie’s maxim is flouted and those tribes, instead of going to war, are celebrated for being extraordinary singular organisms and part of something much bigger?
What if we think about collectives, rather than cliques; collaborations rather than camps? It’s a question Smirnoff Sound Collective are looking to answer with Tribes, a new music series that takes diversity and inclusivity not as polar opposites but as parallel points of fascination.
In the first episode – taking us from New York to Mexico City – we are fully submerged (hair bobbing atop the waterline) in the world of Brooklyn-based DJ collective Discwoman as they celebrate the full spectrum of talented female artists in the electronic world. Cis and genderqueer, house and techno, DJs and producers: with a huge remit – and a fluid orbit, featuring Black Madonna and Star Eyes – the first installment of Tribes, is a testament to their vitality as much as it is to pioneering women and dance music itself.
