Our lovely friends at Sleep All Day Drive All Night have furnished us with a Spotify playlist to brighten up your Friday afternoon.
Sleep All Day Drive All Night is comprised of DJs/promoters Richard and Louise, who specialise in throwing rather excellent parties which take in everything from cosmic disco to psychedelica and garage.
Tomorrow night (Saturday July 31) at Questionmark Bar on Stoke Newington High Street, they’ll be joined by a secret punk funk guest as well as hip-psych genius Cherrystones and Gary The Tall.
Plus, as usual, residents Louise XIV and The Idle Rich hitting you with a garage soul rockabilly krautrockdisco electro explosion! Where else can you dance to slinky spy riffs, ice cold synths and killer motorik grooves?
The night starts at 10.30pm and ends at 4am; entrance is free before 11.30pm and three pounds thereafter.

Sleep All Day Drive All Night began in 2005 with a jam packed night in a new venue in East London – since then we’ve put nights on in strip-clubs, pubs and recording studios. We’ve organised the after party for The 14 Hour Technicolor Dream 40th anniversary in 2007 and we’ve put on live bands, cabaret and all kinds of DJs. After a hiatus of a couple of years we’re now putting on regular parties in East London and we’re sticking to one intimate venue that fits with our vibe and stays open nice and late.
Sleep All Day Drive All Night is a club night with many passions. We love 60s garage, rockabilly, surf, instros, but we also love bollywood, disco, acid house, new wave, punk funk and krautrock. We think that music sounds more exciting when played alongside music from a different genre.
As well as playing ourselves we get different guest DJs involved each time. Always people who are ahead in their field and often those who run their own nights so that we can balance vinyl geekery with dancefloor immediacy. Everything played is aimed squarely at the dancefloor but it’s not all obvious stuff.
Guest DJs so far have included: Cherrystones (Whatever We Want, NY), Barry7 (Add n to (x)), Patrick (Soul Jazz), Richie (Maharishi Hi-Fi) and Michael (Jukebox Jam) and others.

I play a lot of rockabilly but the really nasty sounding end of it. None of the twee stuff. Music that sounds a bit dangerous. There’s a Link Wray track that sounds like a bunch of bad kids racing stolen cars. All growling engines and screeching tires. It’s not on Spotify unfortunately, but this the kind of sound I like from rockabilly. Kip Tyler’s ‘She’s My Witch’ is similarly badass. I also love the schlocky B-movie-ish kind of rockabilly; stuff about zombies, martians etc. Check out ‘Werewolf’ by The Frantics. ‘Funnel of Love’ by Wanda Jackson is also a favourite – it has a kind of girl-groupy sound but weirded out by all the retro sci-fi effects whooshing through it.
I love French pop: cheeky, slinky, stylish, and a bit spacey. The Bardot track on the playlist typifies that sound.
We chose two beat tracks for our Spotify playlist Jacques Dutronc’s mod-garage stomper ‘Le Responsable’ which is reminiscent of a Gallic talke on Satisfaction, while The Poets soulful psych tune is somewhat sinister as well as sweetly melodic. Plus it has handclaps.
A bit of a change of pace now with ‘Black Silk Stocking’, a tense motorik dancer from the Italian duo Krisma. Following on from this is ‘Auf Dem Schwarzen Kanal’, Dompteur Mooner’s 2008 edit of Conrad Schnitzler (ex. Tangerine Dream and Kluster). A hefty slice of Teutonic cool. Ethereal synths intertwine around pulsing beats and robot vocals. What’s not to like? And finally some appropriately titled space-rock (or is it dance?): 120 Days’ epic ‘Come Out, Come Down, Fade Out, Be Gone’.
