Shovel Dance Collective have shared details of their new album, The Shovel Dance.

Out in October, it’s the band’s second full-length album and their first studio album proper, following the field recording-based The Water Is The Shovel Of The Shore, as well as two volumes of cassette releases in the Offcuts And Oddities series.

A statement from the band about the new record said: “This album is a record of our attempts so far to reach for the additive power of collective expression that has forever been essential to traditional music. Unable to summon the strength of a hundred voices in song or the reeling energy of a session, we’ve substituted careful and collaborative arrangement.”

To mark the announcement of The Shovel Dance, the group have shared lead single ‘The Merry Golden Tree’. With its original form dating back to the early 1900s, Shovel Dance Collective’s interpretation of it has been a fixture of their live sets for some time. You can listen to the song below.

In addition, the collective have announced details of UK tour dates through October and November, as well as a three-night residency at London’s Cafe OTO from December 5 to 7. You can find full dates and tickets here.

American Dreams will release The Shovel Dance on October 11, 2024.
