Dub legend Adrian Sherwood and friend Nick Coplowe, aka Mutant Hi-Fi, have remixed London duo Screaming Soul’s entire Ghost In A Shell album. The resulting dub record, entitled Ghost Inna Dub, is due for release through Emerging Species in April.
The original version of Ghost In A Shell was released last year, and was the debut from Screaming Soul, a duo of MC/producer Sandman aka Lucid Mover and vocalist Ghetto priest. Both have worked in the past with veterans like Sherwood himself, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and Congo Natty, and Ghost In A Shell found them working a very London-sounding blend of hip-hop, dub, non-Western percussive influences and soul. You can listen to the original album at their Bandcamp here. Ghost Inna Dub, as its title implies, finds Sherwood and Coplowe offering versions of the original tracks. Sherwood recorded his mixes as live, single takes on the original (a well-established dub method) where Coplow instead completely pulled apart the songs and rebuilt them from the ground up. You can listen to a few of the album’s tracks below – the best are deep, sparse and punchy, though there are a couple of tracks that appear to take diversions into rather dull, stoned, trip-hoppy territory.
