Ryuichi Sakamoto’s ‘Coda’ Set for First International Release

The record, which is a solo piano version of his 'Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence' soundtrack, has never been available outside of Japan until now

Ryuichi Sakamoto’s 1983 album Coda is set for a first-time international release this October.

The 16-track record is a solo piano version of the late artist’s soundtrack for Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, and was initially only officially released in Japan. It’s now been remastered for a reissue courtesy of Paris-based label WeWantSounds, with digital and vinyl releases planned – the latter will include new liner notes penned by music journalist Andy Beta.

You can listen to the remastered ‘Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence’, lifted from Coda, below.

Sakamoto, who first came to fame in Japan as a music producer and member of Yellow Magic Orchestra, passed away in 2023 following a long battle with cancer. An album capturing his final live performance was released earlier this month.

WeWantSounds will release Coda on October 11, 2024.
