Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto are releasing another collaborative album.
Titled TWO, it was recorded during the duo’s live show together at the Sydney Opera House last year. That show saw them performing new, improvised work and key collaborative compositions from their joint catalogue, which now includes five albums, an EP and a film score. You can hear the duo’s performance of ‘The Revenant Theme’, lifted from the album, above.
Last year, the duo played a series of events under the ‘TWO’ banner, taking place at Berlin’s Funkhaus, Barcelona’s Theatre Grec, London’s Barbican Centre and Melbourne’s Hammer Hall. Sydney Opera House hosted the final of those shows which clocked in at two hours. The recording has been edited and re-formatted for the album release.
TWO‘s pulsing, immersive live performance melded electronic and analogue instrumentation with striking visuals to create one of the most precise, beautiful and challengingly magnetic pieces we have ever had the privilege of staging," says Ben Marshall, who is Head of Contemporary Music at Sydney Opera House. "That Sakamoto and Noto are pleased enough with the recorded result to share its continuously unfolding, sinuous, questioning music with others is as singular an honour as it was for Sydney Opera House to host them."
TWO – Live at Sydney Opera House will be released on November 15 via NOTON.
Sakamoto’s debut solo album, Thousand Knives Of, is also due for reissue next month via Wewantsounds.
