With the release of a new five-track EP, entitled Respondent, approaching next month for Diagonal, Russell Haswell has shared a video for one of the tracks, ‘Special Long Version (Demo)’.
Coming in at 10 minutes, the Sue Tompkins-featuring track is a typically off-kilter meshing of noise and sparse electronics. Above, you can watch the graph-based video for the track which is directed by Haswell himself.
"This video is shot using an iPhone 7, in the ‘walking down the street towards the camera’ clichéd style (a la: The Verve, Massive Attack, Ian Brown etc). All the footage was then edited to the audio track and the completed video was run through a Video Synthesiser System (a contemporary modular Eurorack version of the Rutt/Etera Video Synth from the early 70s).
"The Process used is called Vector Rescanning, where standard video is rephotographed from an Oscilloscope (CRT) adding a third axis. This altered image is then processed further in the Video Synth patch (with both Audio and Video modulation) enabling further manipulation of the image."
Respondent is out on February 2. Haswell plays live with Sue Tompkins, featuring support from Modern Institute and Handy, at Cafe Oto on January 29. For tickets and more information, head here.
