Gorgeous, Coil-esque electroacoustic explorations from Bristolian producer/composer

Roly Porter, former member of end-of-days dubstep duo Vex’d and Bristol resident, is set to release a new live 12", written and recorded in collaboration with Cynthia Millar. Entitled Fall Back – Live At Aldeburgh, it’s a recording of a joint performance commissioned by Aldeburgh Music’s Faster Than Sound, which took place in the Britten Studio at Snape Maltings. It’s set for release through Subtext, the label run through Bristol’s Multiverse that’s also released music by Paul Jebanasam and Emptyset, on 22nd October.

In advance of its release, we’re pleased to be able to offer you a stream of its opening track, ‘Three Brothers’. Listen via the embed below.

Roly Porter & Cynthia Millar – Three Brothers by Subtext Recordings

Again via Subtext, Porter released one of our albums of last year in the form of Aftertime, which we described as evoking "the wasteland left after Vex’d scorched the earth; largely featureless, save gales of (acoustic, recorded) violin that blow across its surface, it’s stark and underpinned by the rumble of infernal machinery."

Millar, a multi-instrumentalist, played on Aftertime, and on Fall Back she performs on Dobro and Ondes Martenot, accompanied by Porter on electronics. This piece’s arrangements are based on traditional Scottish folk song ‘Henry Martin’, blending folk forms and real-world acoustic resonance with electronics, in a manner that’s reminiscent of British electroacoustic explorers like Cyclobe or Coil.

You can also watch a video of a section of the performance below.
