Legendary London pirate-not-pirate station Rinse FM have planned a series of events to celebrate their 18th birthday.
It’s set to include a takeover at the Tate Modern Tanks this Saturday 18th August, as part of the ‘Undercurrent: Young Peoples’ Festival’, a series of events held by the Tate showcasing the artistic talents of a younger generation. The event is set to chart the history of the iconic station while exploring the relationship between underground and overground pop music, suggesting that they are perhaps more dependant on one another than common consensus might permit. It’s a pertinent subject given Rinse FM’s history of nurturing now household names like Dizzee Rascal, Wiley and Katy B.
Originally beginning life as a pirate radio station in 1994, Rinse FM is often cited as a key component in the emergence of grime and dubstep. The station, headed up by Geeneus, is considered one of the most vital broadcasters of new electronic music in the UK and beyond, and received an FM broadcast license in 2010.
Later on the evening of Saturday 18th, Rinse will be hosting a warehouse party at an as-yet-undisclosed location in East London. Under the FWD>> banner, the rave will feature sets from twelve different DJs, each of which will select sounds from a year they themselves had an impact on. Hatcha, Youngsta and El-B among are among the names confirmed for the event.
The event series culminates on the last weekend of September, with a pair of events in Manchester (Warehouse Project, Friday 28th) and London (Brixton Academy, Saturday 29th). They will both feature a host of Rinse affiliated names – the Manchester date includes Katy B, Skream, P Money and Diplo, and London will include Boy Better Know, Ms Dynamite and others, along with additional guests Modeselektor and Claude Von Stroke.
