Bringing factual features to the capital’s cinemas, the DocHouse Thursdays season continues at the Prince Charles this week with the vital Arab Spring documentary The Reluctant Revolutionary, unveiled at Berlinale and recently broadcast via the BBC’s Storyville strand. This big screen outing will be followed by a masterclass hosted by its director Sean McAllister, including clips from his forthcoming picture shot in Syria.
Next Thursday’s event is a UK premiere, taking place simultaneously at the Kilburn Tricyle and Brixton Ritzy. To be accompanied by a discussion with green politics expert Larry Lohman, Red Forest Hotel sees Finnish filmmaker Mika Koskinen investigating the plight of rural farmers amid China’s gargantuan tree-planting programme, which appears to be more publicity drive sham than environmentally conscious substance.
There’s a double bill at Hammersmith’s Riverside Studios and Hackney Picturehouse on April 19, comprising a first look at Bram Van Paesschen’s grimly humorous globalisation document Empire Of Dust plus Kristof Bilsen’s short film White Elephant, both set in contemporary Congo.
This month’s schedule concludes at Rich Mix on April 26 with a special preview of Raising Resistance, profiling the struggle against GM crops in Paraguay, screening alongside agri-colonisation short Republic Of Soya.
