A rare Canadian pressing of Prince’s The Black Album has sold for $27,500 making it the most expensive item to have been sold on Discogs.
The pressing is believed to be the only production copy of the album’s original Canadian pressing in 1987 in existence. The album was originally recorded in 1987 but its release was delayed until 1994 after Prince requested that Warner Bros. destroy every copy of the record initially pressed at the last minute. However, a very small number of copies of the record did make it out into circulation.
This pressing of The Black Album has broken the previous record for the most expensive item sold on Discogs which was held by a US pressing of the same album. That sold in 2016 for $15,000.
A handful of copies of the record were found by a Warner Bros. executive late last year and subsequently listed for auction online.
